Video creation is something we all keep hearing that we should be doing in our businesses, but then you may feel overwhelmed by the thought of equipment, coming up with ideas, taking time from your busy plate, and really when it comes down to it, being on camera. I have a free guide here to cover the technical pieces and systems, but today, we are going to unpack how to be confident on camera.
You are coming on camera to speak to your audience and ultimately potential clients. You should come across as the same you they see in your day to day stories or if they were to stop by for a glass of wine. Do not try to become like someone else, or try so hard that you do not shine through. This puts more pressure on you and ultimately, is not building your brand. It should be you that they are getting to know and feel connected with. For you, this should be easier and natural anyways, as it is someone you know how to be!
I have a lot of clients that when they are recording their youtube videos or their course videos, they get hung up staring at their own face on the screen. It’s not a natural thing to stare at ourselves in conversation, so of course we feel awkward. Instead, try staring right above or at the top of the camera. When I went to a performing arts school, they taught us to look at the exit sign and not seeing a face staring back at me helped me get into character. This goes the same here! Find a spot to look near the camera that allows you to step into that expert role so you can freely and confidently teach!
Watch youtube or instagram or course videos that you have of others. What do you like about how they teach? What bothers you or distracts you from the content? Do they smack their lips? Do they touch their hair? How’s the audio? You are also a consumer so use your own opinions to teach you what to focus on when recording!
Have a plan of what you will say when recording your course or youtube video. Do not feel stuck in the script though. I prefer just talking points, as once I get started, the content will start flowing freely! Too much stress of knowing your script word for word adds another layer where your confidence may lag. You know your expertise! Speak freely.
Video can feel like a lot at first and can leave you with never getting started. I have seen so many clients increase DM’s and connections with others, increase email open rate, or have rave reviews from students on their course once they took the jump and hopped in front of the camera. Feel free to email with any questions or connect on IG!
Now go blissfully create your media with a little confidence!
